The popularity of mining hotels (hosting facilities) is easy to explain: entering truly profitable cryptocurrency mining becomes more difficult every year. Mining costs continue to rise, as do the required capacities, and the most obvious and simplest solution to these challenges is still increasing the number of miners. However, while 2-3 miners can still be placed in a private home or garage (though not without legal complications), a truly large number of mining units is almost impossible to host - both physically and legally.

For quite some time now, mining hotels have become the solution to the equipment placement problem due to a number of undeniable advantages:

  • organized and legalized infrastructure for hosting mining equipment;
  • centralized system for servicing and monitoring the physical operation of miners;
  • remote monitoring system with the ability for “rapid response”;
  • availability of in-house service centers or third-party ones (under contract);
  • simplified billing system (either all-inclusive pricing or ready-to-pay invoices);
  • reduced or eliminated financial risks in case of unforeseen situations leading to equipment damage or loss; organized logistics system.

Despite a well-developed hosting market that offers a wide range of companies with proven reputations, like any other business partnership, placing equipment in mining hotels carries certain risks and requires additional preparation, knowledge, and control from the owner.

In this article, the 0ˣStratix team will share information on which hosting nuances are important to consider and how you can protect yourself from unnecessary risks.

Choosing a Hosting Provider

The choice ahead is a difficult one - not so much because of the number of available options, but because of the level of analysis required for each of them. This can be compared to choosing a car dealership: there may be many sellers, but you must carefully filter out those that may expose you to problems such as inflated prices, forced add-on services, grey financing schemes, refusal of warranty service, etc.

When choosing a mining hotel, we recommend paying attention to the following aspects:

  1. Company experience; As a rule, young companies, despite attractive terms and pricing, often face organizational issues and lack qualified technical specialists.

  2. Legal transparency; Pay attention to publicly available information about the hosting provider and its owner. Using specialized services - often even free versions - you can uncover hidden data such as the number of lawsuits against the company, other businesses registered under the owner’s name, and their positions in other organizations.

  3. Reviews and reputation; Do not neglect studying reviews about the hosting provider and the opinions of those who have already worked with it. Even if you do not personally know any of the hosting’s clients, reach out to mining community chats - there is a high probability you will find people who have interacted with this hosting provider and can share their experience.

  4. Location It is important to know exactly where your equipment is located. Ideally, you should be provided with the exact address of the facility. This ensures:

    • your own awareness;
    • the ability to independently obtain information about weather conditions, climate, incidents, etc. in the hosting area;

    Regarding climate: hosting in regions with high humidity accelerates equipment degradation; strong winds complicate or make stable ventilation impossible; frequent heat or severe frost destabilizes miner operation, increases failure risks, and may accelerate wear.

    • understanding of the legal operating regime for miners in the hosting region (for example, in the Irkutsk region, mining equipment operation is restricted during the winter period);

    • the ability to independently analyze the stability of internet and power connections (knowing the location allows you to assess the likelihood of outages and overall connection quality).
  5. Client communication methods and channels You must clarify the working hours and communication format of the hosting’s technical support and other representatives (sales managers, finance department, etc.). It is important to understand how quickly the mining hotel staff can provide information and resolve equipment-related issues.

  6. Technical equipment and security You should independently verify or receive official confirmation from the hosting provider that the following are in place:

  • legally required fire suppression and smoke detection systems;
  • temperature monitoring tools (fixed thermometers, thermal imagers);
  • power supply monitoring and emergency shutdown systems;
  • software and other means of protection against digital interference (hidden miners, viruses, etc.);
  • backup internet connection channels and infrastructure.

Contract

Any business relationship begins, operates, and ends according to the terms of the signed contract - and hosting cooperation is no exception. We suggest considering several important aspects before signing a hosting agreement:

  • areas of responsibility (including financial liability) of the hosting provider;
  • availability of equipment insurance;
  • list of services included in the monthly fee;
  • availability and list of additional paid services;
  • payment terms and methods, as well as invoice formation principles (prepayment amount, recalculation conditions, etc.);
  • list of reasons and other conditions for penalties (both from the hosting provider and the client);
  • existence of an equipment acceptance and transfer act with recorded inventory and identification within the contract;
  • list of physical and other manipulations with client mining equipment that may be performed without the owner’s approval.

Let us draw attention to the equipment acceptance and transfer act. The list of mining equipment transferred to the hosting provider should include information that helps identify each unit and describe its physical condition. We recommend specifying the following data:

  1. Individual factory serial number (SN) of the miner - the main identifier, indicated on the manufacturer’s tamper-proof label;
  2. Model name with nominal hashrate - also specified on the manufacturer’s label;
  3. Factory serial numbers of other equipment components - it is useful to include SNs of hashboards, power supply units, control boards, and even fans;

    However, collecting this data may require opening the miner’s casing. If the equipment is still under manufacturer warranty, list only serial numbers that are externally accessible.

  4. Comment on the miner’s condition - usually includes general condition, presence/absence of intact factory seals and tamper protection, and any design features (non-original PSU, missing hashboards, etc.).

The acceptance and transfer act is a crucial document that greatly simplifies the compensation process in case your equipment is damaged due to the hosting provider’s fault.

Shipping

Shipping is a responsible task where both delivery time and safety are critical. We offer the following list of nuances to consider when sending equipment to a hosting facility:

  1. The acceptance act is extremely important, so treat its preparation and completion responsibly (depending on the shipping format, it may include the courier’s signature or the transport company’s stamp).
  2. Before shipping, personally inspect the equipment - or better yet, test its functionality and ensure all required components are present. This takes time but ensures the miners are fully operational.
  3. If possible, take photos or videos of the inspection, packaging, and shipment process (do not forget to enable date and time display).
  4. To speed up deployment, pre-configure the equipment in advance, for example during testing.
  5. Add spare components to the shipment and list them in the acceptance act. Basic spares include:
    • original or verified third-party fans of the required type (fans are consumables, so stock them in sufficient quantities);
    • original or verified third-party power supply units (more expensive and not consumables, but replacements are fairly regular);
    • control board (even more expensive, replaced rarely, usually temporarily during repair of the original board).
  6. After completing the acceptance act, verify that it matches the actual information on the miners.
  7. Use only a transport company or private courier that you personally know and trust.
  8. Pay close attention to packaging - it must reliably protect against:
    • moisture and dust (often using durable polymer film with dense wrapping);
    • physical impact (bubble wrap, thick cardboard, fillers);
    • drops (rigid pallet fixation with proper crating).
  9. In extreme weather conditions (hurricanes, blizzards, temperatures below or above ±25°C, etc.), it is better to postpone shipping until conditions normalize.
  10. Your personal presence during loading and shipment can significantly reduce risks of unforeseen situations and errors.
  11. After the equipment arrives at the hosting facility, do not rush to power it on. Inform the staff, as the equipment needs time to dry and warm up (especially if delivered during rain or frost).

Ideally, you should ship fully tested, functional, verified, configured, and securely packaged equipment to avoid most problems.

Configuration

Equipment configuration also requires additional attention. Beyond choosing a pool, obtaining correct and stable stratum connections, and selecting the optimal operating mode, we recommend considering the following:

  • as mentioned earlier, configuration should be done before shipment so the equipment arrives ready for operation;
  • pool selection should be based not only on profitability, but also on operational and connection stability in the hosting region;
  • one way to simplify miner monitoring is using custom firmware, which provides a wider range of settings, a convenient interface, and the ability to bypass restrictions;

  • some miner models allow power or performance mode adjustments - do not rush to choose maximum performance. In many cases, it significantly increases wear and failure risks. To protect your miners, consider weather conditions, manufacturer recommendations, and the miner’s physical condition (initial wear level).

We additionally recommend configuring miners so that the worker name on the pool matches the individual factory serial number. While it may not look very neat, it allows quick identification of a specific miner and enables you to provide precise information to hosting staff.

Correct configuration may not seem like a top priority given the ability to change settings at any time, but when calculating downtime losses and increased failure risks, there is no doubt: equipment must be configured correctly, safely, and quickly.

Operation During Hosting

We have now reached the longest and most important stage - actual equipment operation in the mining hotel. Despite any assurances from the hosting provider about full maintenance and support, we recommend not leaving everything unattended and maintaining your own level of control. Here are several important tips to help you:

  1. Do not hesitate to contact technical support or other hosting representatives with questions about your equipment. Any inquiry may serve as evidence of issue detection and mark the start of the hosting provider’s response time.
  2. Follow the principle “I am the first to notice”. Keep in mind that despite large staff, one employee usually oversees hundreds of machines from different clients and models. Even with high automation, you will likely detect issues with your miners faster.
  3. Building on the previous point: “Efficiency, stability, and safety of miner operation are my primary goals”. While hosting staff may also be interested in proper operation (especially if fees include a percentage commission), the greatest income - and the greatest financial risks - belong to you. Do not hesitate to set specific tasks for hosting staff, such as:
    • regular monthly air blowing;
    • deep cleaning (with your permission to disassemble equipment);
    • pool reconfiguration (you provide the necessary data);
    • changing operating mode/power or shutting down equipment (promptly submit requests during adverse weather conditions, etc.);
    • firmware updates from the manufacturer or installation of custom firmware (provide required files if using third-party firmware), etc.
  4. Inform hosting staff in advance about machines still under warranty and prohibit opening them without your consent.
  5. In addition to point #4, request that staff do not replace components from your spare stock, change settings or operating modes (optionally), or send equipment to service centers without your approval.
  6. Do not neglect maintaining your own equipment and spare parts inventory. Any experienced mining hotel keeps centralized records, but human error, negligence, or bad faith still exist. Create your own table based on the acceptance act and hosting-provided data, and record all changes in quantities, models, settings, operating modes, failures, and spare replacements.

Example of a basic self-tracking table:

Pool+workerSerial numberModel + nominal hashrateOperating statusComment
1pool.worker1q2w3e4r5t6yModel 0THOperatingRunning on two hashboards, #2 is faulty

Conclusions

All of the above can be reduced to one simple principle: do not let things run on autopilot and independently control both the initial hosting placement and ongoing equipment operation, regardless of assurances from hosting representatives.
